Canterbury

As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:14-15

Learning Resources

Bible Study

  • Mounce's Greek for the Rest of Us. This is an online class in 14 lessons, keyed to an inexpensive book, that will give you a good introduction to Biblical Greek. There's no intent to make you a scholar, but it will enable you to use the better commentaries, the lexicons, as well as the various computer programs that help with understanding what the Greek Bible actually says.

Personal Devotions

  • Mission St. Clare. This is a simple site for the Daily Office. You can make this the home page of your web browser.
  • St. Bede's Breviary. A more complex site offering many options.

Recreational Reading

  • The Bible
  • Anything by CS Lewis
  • Downing, Raymond (2008). Death and Life in America: Biblical Healing and Biomedicine. (Recommended by Dr. Nathan Wilson)
  • Dearmer, Percy. Body and Soul: An Enquiry Into The Effect Of Religion Upon Health, With A Description Of Christian Works Of Healing From The New Testament To The Present Day. (Recommended by Dr. Bill Dolen. Historical interest, yet practical for today. Much of the biology is a bit dated.)
  • Taylor, Barbara Brown (2009). An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith. (Recommended by Dr. Bill Dolen. Worship isn't something that we just do on Sunday. Find God in the world around you.)
  • Mitchell, Leonel L (1991). Praying Shapes Believing: A Theological Commentary on the Book of Common Prayer. (Recommended by Dr. Bill Dolen. Anglicanism 101.)
  • Anonymous. The Cloud of Unknowning. The classic primer on centering prayer.
  • Hughes III, Robert Davis (2008). Beloved Dust: Tides of the Spirit in the Christian Life. This book is a brilliant, modern presentation of ancient ideas about our mystical relationship with God through the person of the Holy Spirit. It's not a fast read.

Resources for Scientific Theology

  • Christians in Science. A UK-based international organization for study and discussion of the relationship between Christian faith and science.
  • Alister McGrath Home Page. Dr. McGrath is a leading proponent of scientific theology, and author of a major textbook of historical theology.

Some Podcasts

What's Fr. Dr. D. reading these days?

  • McGrath, Alister E. (2004). The Science of God: An Introduction to Scientific Theology. McGrath is an English priest with a background in science. He argues that science and theology are not mutually exclusive realms. This is an introduction to a 3-volume systematic theology that challenges the tenets of the Enlightenment era.
