Evangelism Committee

One of the important priorities of St. Paul's is to attract new parishioners and encourage them to become part of the St. Paul's family. The Evangelism Committee is open to ideas from every possible source in order to accomplish its mission with openness and dignity so that people feel welcomed but not overwhelmed when they consider attending church services and joining the parish.

This web site and web link can play an important role. Thanks to the hard and creative work of two members of this committee Patt and Stacy Nuessle, the web site has been upgraded. Ellison Hollifield, on the staff of St. Paul's, checks the site on a regular basis to insure that it is kept up to date.

A new St. Paul's brochure will soon be published which will not only highlight the many activities of our church but also provide a means to reach out to various segments of the greater community of the Central Savannah Region.

With the rapid growth of North Augusta and Aiken County, there are opportunities to attract people who live very near our church. Fort Gordon is another area of high potential. Now that the Army has changed its policy of rapid transfers of military professionals, more and more soldiers are making Augusta their permanent home. Rather than attend church at one of the base chapels, they will be more inclined to find a church home off base. Another area of expected growth is the downtown area of Augusta including the condo complex to be built just to the South of St. Paul's.

One of the initiatives of the Evangelism Committee is to practice “radical hospitality”. There are many dimensions to radical hospitality.
  • Having greeters out in front of the church to make people feel welcome.
  • Having attractive signs at key locations on the church grounds and on Riverwalk.
  • Within a few days after someone visits St. Paul's and shows interest in our church, a handwritten note of welcome from the Associate Rector is sent to the newcomer.
  • Newcomer parties are held periodically so that members of the vestry and other church leaders can welcome and get to know these newcomers.
