Rose Sunday Concert

Rose Sunday is traditionally the 4th Sunday in Lent and is also known as “Mothering Sunday” (when visits were made to the cathedral or “mother church” of the diocese) and “Refreshment Sunday” (the 4th Sunday in Lent is the mid-point in the season). In 1984 Keith Shafer began a tradition of concerts held at 4:00 p.m. on Rose Sunday that have featured the Casavant organ, often augmented with other instruments. A reception hosted by the parish’s Martha Guild traditionally follows this event.

The Riverwalk Series

The Riverwalk Series was incorporated as 501-c-3 arts organization in 1991 in order to provide a means of receiving public financial support for concerts hosted by Saint Paul’s Church.  In the early years of the series the focus was on presenting “Great Choirs” and numerous famous ensembles from both the U.S. and Europe were presented in full evening concerts. Later, the series would sponsor an annual concert on Independence Day, preceding the city of Augusta’s Riverwalk fireworks display. By 2007 this concert had grown to “sold-out-in-advance with standing-room-only.”

Tuesday’s Music Live

Keith Shafer became familiar with the concept of noon luncheon concerts during his college student days in the early 1970s when he was Gerre Hancock’s assistant at Christ Church Cathedral, Cincinnati. In 1977, after he became Director of Music and Organist at the Church of the Epiphany in Richardson, Texas (a Dallas suburb), he began a series with the same name in that city. It was in Augusta, however, that Tuesday’s Music Live enjoyed its greatest success, becoming the largest concert series of its kind in the country. With an annual budget of more than $30,000 the series is able to present guest musicians including local, regional, national, and international talent and to showcase some of the area’s finest restaurants. More than 100,000 people have attended the free concerts since Tuesday’s Music Live began in 1987

Augusta Opera at Saint Paul’s

“The Augusta Opera at Saint Paul’s” has become a highlight of the area’s holiday celebrations, featuring celebrated guest soloists, the Augusta Opera Chorus, the Augusta Children’s Chorale, and orchestra. The concerts are usually held on the first Sunday in December at 3:30 and 6:00 p.m. and tickets are available through the Augusta Opera Box Office.
