Saint Paul's Music Program

The Schuke Organ in the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul

Dr. Preston Rockholt was the Director of Music and Organist of Saint Paul’s Church from 1962-1964. He later purchased a two-manual and pedal mechanical-action organ from the German firm of Karl Schuke Orgelbauwerkstat in Berlin. Dr. Rockholt died in 1974 before the organ was completed and the instrument was later installed in his Augusta home on Walton Way. In 1987 this instrument was acquired from Mrs. Carrie Rockholt for the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul for the sum of $40,000. It was removed and reassembled by Keith Shafer and William Manning and replaced an Allen electronic organ from the 1960s. In 2002 the carpet on the Chapel floor was removed and wood floors were installed, providing an improved acoustic. The November 2007 the Schuke organ was revoiced, the goal being a less aggressive and more refined tone. Changes were made in the composition of two stops, providing a more cohesive ensemble.  The work was done by M.P. Rathke, Inc. of Greens Fork, Indiana, with support from Cornel Zimmer Organ Builders of Denver, North Carolina.
